Will Fall Webworm harm my tree?

Fall Webworm will not harm your tree. Often mistaken for tent caterpillars which occur in the Spring, Fall webworm is from late July through to October in the Kitchener-Waterloo region as well as Guelph, New Hamburg, Elmira, Cambridge, and surrounding areas. These web-like nests can be seen on the outer parts of the limbs of various species of trees including Walnut, Birch, Cherry, etc.

Although these caterpillars like to munch on the luscious leaves, they will not damage or kill your tree - they actually might  decrease the amount of leaves for you to rake up! We understand they can be a nuisance; however, rarely do we apply treatments. Often a better approach is to do nothing or prune out branches where the nests are directly over a sitting area.
